Dear Colleagues,
Gastrointestinal surgery has undergone remarkable transformations over the past decades. The introduction of laparoscopic and robotic techniques has revolutionized surgical practice, enabling less-invasive procedures with faster recovery times and reduced postoperative morbidity.
In parallel, improvements in perioperative care, enhanced recovery protocols, and multidisciplinary treatment strategies have further optimized surgical outcomes for patients with gastrointestinal diseases. Advances in imaging, endoscopy, and interventional radiology have also expanded the therapeutic options available to surgeons.
More recently, attention has been drawn to the environmental impact of surgical activities. Operating rooms are among the most resource-intensive hospital areas, generating substantial waste and energy consumption. Consequently, sustainable surgical practices, including waste reduction, recycling initiatives, and environmentally conscious perioperative strategies, are becoming an important focus of research and clinical innovation.
The aim of this Special Issue is to provide an updated overview of recent developments and current challenges in gastrointestinal surgery. The Special Issue seeks to collect high-quality research addressing innovative surgical techniques, perioperative management strategies, and technological advances that may improve surgical outcomes and patient care.
Particular attention will be given to minimally invasive approaches, surgical innovation, digital technologies, and sustainable surgical practices aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of gastrointestinal surgery.

This Special Issue welcomes submissions including:
- Original research articles
- Clinical and observational studies
- Systematic reviews and meta-analyses
- Narrative reviews on emerging surgical techniques
- Studies addressing sustainability and environmental impact in surgery
Contributions from multidisciplinary teams including surgeons, gastroenterologists, anesthesiologists, environmental health researchers, and experts in healthcare sustainability are strongly encouraged.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
