Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
It is my pleasure to invite you to contribute to a Special Issue entitled “Advances in the Diagnosis, Treatment and Prognosis of Hepatocellular Carcinoma—2nd Edition”. This is a new volume of our Special Issue, in which we published 8 papers in the first volume. For more details, please visit the following link: https://www.mdpi.com/journal/medicina/special_issues/07TJCR853D.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third most prevalent cause of death worldwide, and its incidence is expected to rise significantly in the coming years due to the effects of Westernization. In fact, the growing impact of metabolic disease has reshaped the features of hepatology. Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has become the leading cause of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The latter can also occur in the absence of the cirrhotic evolution of hepatic disease.
Thus, the early diagnosis of HCC is crucial in clinical and bench research. Compared to anti-angiogenetic treatment, the prognosis and life expectancy associated with HCC are improved by the use of check-point inhibitors. However, the lack of a genetic mutation fingerprint in HCC requires the development of novel biomarkers for more personalized medicine. In this context, the growing role of gut microbiota dysbiosis in liver disease and the physiopathology of HCC could be an efficacious tool in the diagnostic and therapeutic armamentarium.
The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:
- HCC prevalence and incidence;
- HCC pathophysiology;
- Updates on HCC diagnosis;
- The role of the gut microbiota and its dysbiosis in HCC natural history;
- Updates on HCC treatments;
- The modulation of the gut microbiota in HCC treatment.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Medicina is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
