Innovative Technologies and Risk Factors in Joint Surgery
This special issue belongs to the section “Orthopedics“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Joint surgery has undergone remarkable transformations over the past few decades, evolving in parallel with advances in biomedical engineering, imaging technologies, and a growing body of clinical research. These developments have led to the widespread adoption of minimally invasive techniques, patient-specific instrumentation, novel biomaterials, and robotic-assisted surgery, all aimed at improving accuracy, reducing complications, and enhancing functional recovery. Alongside these innovations, growing attention has been paid to the identification and management of risk factors—whether systemic or procedure-specific—that can significantly influence surgical outcomes.
The goal of this Special Issue, entitled “Innovative Technologies and Risk Factors in Joint Surgery”, is to offer an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of current challenges and advances in the field. By bridging clinical insights and technological innovations, we aim to explore how emerging tools and strategies are reshaping orthopaedic and trauma care.
We are seeking cutting-edge contributions in the form of original research articles, clinical trials, and systematic reviews. Submissions may address all joints—including the hip, knee, shoulder, ankle, and smaller articulations—and should focus on topics such as new surgical techniques, perioperative risk assessment models, digital tools (e.g., navigation systems, AI), and methods to optimize postoperative outcomes. Manuscripts with high translational value and clinical relevance are especially encouraged.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Medicina is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
