Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Constipation is a very prevalent condition that occurs during pregnancy. Some population-based studies have indicated that nearly 40% of pregnant women suffer from some degree of constipation which quite often it persists after delivery. It is not only an unpleasant symptom that negatively impacts quality of life during pregnancy but it also may promote the development of other, more severe, complications. Severe constipation can result in urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse and dysfunction. Additionally, long term straining predisposes the development of perianal diseases, such as hemorrhoids or fissures. Furthermore, it is very important to address this issue as it may have a negative impact on the overall experience of pregnancy and the relationship between mother and newborn.

The treatment for constipation usually depends on its severity and length of the symptoms, and a stepwise approach is used. First line treatment options include lifestyle modifications and dietary changes; however, in more severe cases, the use of laxatives may be warranted. As pregnancy is a very sensitive condition, not much research has been carried out in this area.

In this Special Issue, we would like to provide a collection of papers, original articles, or clinical/systematic reviews discussing the latest research on the treatment of constipation during pregnancy.
