Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Recent advances in oral implantology and oral disease management have transformed contemporary dental practice through the integration of digital technologies, regenerative biomaterials, and minimally invasive surgical protocols. The growing prevalence of peri-implant diseases, alveolar bone defects, medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), and systemic conditions affecting osseointegration has increased the need for personalized and evidence-based implant rehabilitation strategies. Modern approaches involving computer-guided implant surgery, three-dimensional (3D) imaging, artificial intelligence-assisted diagnostics, and customized implant fabrication have significantly improved surgical precision and patient outcomes. In parallel, regenerative techniques using platelet concentrates, growth factors, bone substitutes, and bioactive surface modifications have enhanced hard and soft tissue healing around implants.

The current literature also emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary management in medically compromised patients, particularly those with diabetes, osteoporosis, or autoimmune diseases, where implant survival may be affected. Furthermore, innovations in biomaterials, such as zirconia and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) implants, are expanding treatment possibilities while improving esthetics and biocompatibility.

This Special Issue aims to critically explore the recent developments in oral disease diagnosis, peri-implant tissue regeneration, digital implant planning, and novel surgical techniques that contribute to safer, more predictable, and patient-centered oral rehabilitation.

In addition, this Special Issue will address the implications of various oral diseases on the planning, placement, and long-term success of dental implants. Conditions such as periodontitis, oral lichen planus, oral squamous cell carcinoma, cystic and fibro-osseous lesions, temporomandibular disorders, xerostomia, and mucosal inflammatory diseases may significantly influence implant prognosis, peri-implant tissue stability, and osseointegration outcomes. The presence of chronic infection, altered bone metabolism, mucosal pathology, or previous surgical and radiotherapeutic interventions may compromise both surgical approaches and prosthetic rehabilitation. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the biological interactions between oral diseases and implant therapy is essential for risk assessment, treatment planning, and maintenance protocols. Emphasis should also be placed on early diagnosis, interdisciplinary management, and preventive strategies that optimize implant survival in patients presenting with complex oral and systemic conditions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Medicina is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
