Dear Colleagues,
Recent developments in materials science have greatly enhanced water purification and treatment technologies. New materials such as nanomaterials, graphene-based membranes, and advanced polymers are being designed to remove contaminants more effectively and in a more sustainable way. These materials improve processes like filtration, adsorption, and catalytic degradation, allowing the removal of pollutants including heavy metals, microplastics, organic compounds, and harmful microorganisms from water. For instance, nanostructured membranes provide greater permeability and selectivity, enabling faster purification with lower energy consumption. In addition, photocatalytic materials can use sunlight to break down toxic substances, making water treatment more environmentally friendly. Overall, these advancements in materials are contributing to more efficient, affordable, and sustainable methods of ensuring access to clean and safe water.
This Special Issue aims to feature original research articles and review papers on the development, characterization, and application of materials for the removal of emerging contaminants from drinking water, surface water, and wastewater systems. It seeks to bring together state-of-the-art research that links advances in materials science with real-world applications, contributing to the development of efficient, robust, and sustainable water treatment systems worldwide.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
