Dear Colleagues,
Following the success of the first volume, we are pleased to announce the launch of the 2nd edition of this Special Issue.
Advancements in surface engineering, encompassing deposition techniques, advanced characterization methods, and diverse applications, remain crucial to the development of numerous disciplines in science and technology. For functional materials, there is a continuous demand for hybrid coatings, multi-layered systems, and nanostructured materials that provide enhanced surface properties, such as high hardness, superior wear resistance, low friction coefficients, and tailored biocompatibility. In particular, vacuum and plasma-assisted deposition technologies, often combined with hybrid configurations, enable the synthesis of thin layers on polymers, ceramics, and metals while ensuring excellent adhesion to the substrate.
The cutting edge of modern surface engineering relies on the precise design of chemical and phase compositions, as well as the optimization of individual synthesis stages. Such tailored processes are essential for engineering advanced layered structures capable of performing under the demanding operational conditions of specific structural components.
In view of the foregoing, we cordially invite you to submit your valuable research to this 2nd edition of the Special Issue in Materials, entitled “Advanced Functional Coatings for Surface Engineering: Deposition, Properties and Applications—Second Edition”. We welcome original research papers and comprehensive reviews focusing on innovative deposition systems and the functional design of coatings. In particular, the topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Plasma-based and vacuum deposition processes (HiPIMS, magnetron sputtering, PACVD, etc.);
- Additive manufacturing and surface post-treatments;
- Chemical and liquid-phase methods (dip coating, spin coating, sol–gel, and spray coating);
- Thermal and environmental barrier coatings (TBCs/EBCs);
- Advanced tribological, anti-wear properties, and anti-corrosion properties;
- Smart coatings (self-healing, self-cleaning, and stimuli-responsive materials);
- Multicomponent, gradient, and high-entropy alloy (HEA) coatings;
- Microstructure evolution, phase transitions, and numerical modelling/simulation;
- Biocompatible, bioactive, and antimicrobial coatings for medical devices;
- Industrial applications (cutting tools, automotive, aerospace, optical, and electronic devices).

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
