Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The application of electrochemical methods has become a widely adopted approach for the surface modification of metallic materials. These techniques are selected based on the intended applications of the processed components. Owing to the versatility of electrochemical processes, it is possible to tailor surface properties across a broad spectrum—from ultra-smooth to highly porous morphologies, as well as from superhydrophobic to superhydrophilic characteristics. Furthermore, these methods enable the effective treatment of components with complex geometries.

Particular attention is devoted to processes based on anodic oxidation, including conventional anodizing, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), and electropolishing. These techniques can be employed to fabricate bioactive and simultaneously bacteriostatic coatings on titanium implants, among other applications. In addition, the formation of ceramic coatings on magnesium and aluminum substrates significantly enhances their corrosion resistance.

This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the latest advances in the broadly defined field of anodic treatment of engineering materials. We invite contributions focused on the fabrication of ultra-smooth surfaces, the development of corrosion-resistant oxide layers, wear-resistant coatings, bioactive coatings, antibacterial surfaces, as well as photocatalytic and catalytic materials.

Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Electropolishing;
  • Plasma electrolytic polishing;
  • Anodic oxidation;
  • Plasma electrolytic oxidation;
  • Anodic formation of nanotubes.

Manuscript Submission Information

Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
