Dear Colleagues,
Nonlinear systems are ubiquitous in modern engineering, spanning advanced robotics, autonomous vehicles, aerospace systems and smart manufacturing. As industrial machinery demands higher precision, faster response times and greater autonomy, traditional linear control methods often fall short. Controlling and planning for these systems presents significant challenges due to inherent nonlinearities, dynamic uncertainties and strict operational constraints.
This Special Issue aims to provide a dedicated platform for capturing the latest theoretic developments and practical innovations in nonlinear system control and intelligent motion planning. Modern mechanical systems are evolving towards higher speeds, greater precision and increased autonomy, which inherently introduces severe nonlinearities, multi-body couplings and dynamic uncertainties. Traditional linear framework often struggles to meet these stringent industrial demands.
Consequently, this Special Issue focuses on bridging the gap between advanced control theories and real-world engineering applications. We welcome contributions that explore novel nonlinear control strategies, adaptive learning mechanisms and robust motion-planning algorithms designed to enhance the stability, tracking accuracy and efficiency of complex machinery. By gathering high-quality research, this issue aims to advance the state of the art in intelligent machines, robotics and automated systems, directly aligning with the core scope of Machines.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Advanced Nonlinear Control Methods: Innovative designs in sliding mode control, backstepping control, active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) and nonlinear PID variants.
- Intelligent Motion Planning: Real-time trajectory generation, obstacle avoidance and kinodynamic planning for autonomous and robotic systems.
- Optimization-Based Control: Model predictive control (MPC) and robust optimization for constrained nonlinear mechanical systems.
- Learning-Based Control and Planning: Integration of neural networks, reinforcement learning and physics-informed AI with classical nonlinear control.
- Underactuated and Multi-Body Systems: Control and stabilization strategies for underactuated mechanical systems and flexible structures.
- Safety-Critical Control: Control barrier functions (CBFs), fault-tolerant control and safe motion planning under strict operational constraints.
- Industrial Applications: Experimental validation and case studies in advanced robotics, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), autonomous driving and smart manufacturing equipment.

Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
