Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

According to data from the World Health Organization, women spend 9 years of their lives in poor health, 25% more time spent in poor health than men, and 80% of patients diagnosed with autoimmune diseases are women. Every day, 800 potential mothers die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth; 95% of maternal deaths and 94% of cervical cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. Worldwide, human papillomavirus infection is associated with over 300,000 cervical cancer deaths each year. In light of these data, there is a need to focus on obstetrics and gynecologic medicine to end preventable maternal mortality, eliminate sexually transmitted infections and mother-to-child transmission of communicable diseases, and reduce female cancers, such as cervical and breast cancer, through initiatives towards improving early screening and prevention. Furthermore, research into autoimmune diseases must be pursued. All of these future challenges await us and must be conquered for the improved health and well-being of women, and the purpose of this Special Issue is to precisely address such challenges.
