Dear Colleagues,
The Lemnaceae family, commonly called duckweeds, is 36 species of the smallest and simplest flowering plants that inhabit all continents except Antarctica. Because of their ancient origin, tiny size, and simple morphology, the phylogenic grouping of this clade has become more dependent on new molecular methods. Duckweeds’ small size and rapid clonal growth in aseptic conditions made them a stable and simple model for studying plant physiology and biochemistry. In addition to their efficiency in water quality testing and wastewater remediation, duckweeds have been used for animal feed or feed additives, human nutrition or therapeutic operations, biofuel and value-added biochemical productions, and even for space closed-loop life support systems. Given the importance of these incredible plants, researchers are investing the genetic mechanisms that make them function this way and are committed to the implementation of various applications.
The aim of this Special Issue in Life is to provide a comprehensive update of the current progress in duckweed biodiversity, physiology, and applications. We cordially invite you to submit manuscripts (original research papers and reviews) that address these topics. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Life is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
