Special Issue Information

Dear colleagues,

The harmonious coupling of human and natural systems is a core research theme for sustainable landscape development and regional spatial governance. Driven by intensifying global climate change, frequent extreme heat events and ongoing high-density urbanization, urban built environments and natural landscapes have become increasingly intertwined and mutually interrelated, a trend which exerts growing stress on urban ecosystems, leading to widespread challenges such as biodiversity decline, ecological functional degradation and insufficient climate resilience. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promote the construction of synergistic human settlement systems integrating physical spaces, social dimensions and ecological environments. Such frameworks support the implementation of Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) and provide essential guidance for the innovative transformation of regional spatial planning.

Centered on the core values of “Sharing,” “Adaptation,” and “Co-creation” encapsulated by the framework of shared ecologies within human settlement ecosystems, this Special Issue adopts a multi-scale landscape and regional planning perspective to re-examine the evolving connotations, practical challenges, and sustainable transition pathways of urban ecosystems amid ongoing societal and ecological transformation. It aims to explore actionable mechanisms and planning strategies that enable built environments and natural ecological systems to collaboratively cope with intensifying climate risks and high-density urban pressures, thereby enhancing human settlement resilience and advancing the achievement of SDGs. This Special Issue welcomes the submission of both original research articles and review papers from around the globe. We invite international scholars to contribute cutting-edge theoretical insights, empirical findings, technical innovations, and practical case studies.

Relevant topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Nature-based solutions for urban ecosystem adaptation and resilience;
  • Ecological performance assessment and optimization of urban blue–green infrastructure;
  • Ecological restoration and natural integration in high-density urban contexts;
  • Urban biodiversity conservation and community ecological co-creation;
  • Urban–rural ecological planning and cross-regional collaborative governance;
  • AI-powered techniques and innovative methods for ecological planning and landscape design;
  • Policy frameworks, evaluation systems and institutional innovations for urban ecological transitions.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Land is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
