Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to introduce our forthcoming Special Issue of the journal Land, entitled "Sustainable food landscapes: agricultural practices and consumer awareness". Sustainable food production should take advantage of current studies to promote sustainable development; however, a lack of education and a disconnect between actions and behaviour inhibits sustainable practices and devalues sustainable agriculture farming. Consumers need to learn how to approach sustainability holistically and understand the connection between their daily actions, climate change and soil degradation.

Faced with this challenge, we encourage submissions that address sustainable agricultural methods coupled with land use transformation research that addresses the linkages between rural and urban areas, sustainable food production, the valorisation of natural and cultural agricultural heritage through sustainable rural tourism, and the adoption of innovative and educational activities that impact consumer behaviour with regard to the protection and conservation of water, energy, food, materials, and the ecological nexus, explored using a range of formal and informal educational resources.  This not only helps to further enhance the theoretical system of land use transformation based on sustainable food, but also provides a new line of research regarding the sustainable behaviour of consumers to valorise sustainable agriculture and envisage an approximation of society to food systems.

This Special Issue will welcome manuscripts (original research articles and review papers) that link the following themes:

  • Food system adapted to the prevention and control of land degradation.
  • Food landscapes that valorize water and soil resources from the perspective of the SDGs.
  • Making cultural landscapes and agricultural systems compatible.
  • Agritourism, ecotourism and educational activities to link consumers and farmers.
  • The role of urban farms, community and education gardens in food systems transitions.
  • Circular economy as input to improve sustainability and regional development.
  • Linkages between urban citizens and rural areas.

We look forward to receiving your original research articles and reviews.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.

This study delves into the urgent task of comprehending and tackling the questions arising from climate change and food security by advocating for sustainable community approaches. Motivated by the urgency of these issues, this research aims to assess the transformative ability of sustainable community practices in mitigating carbon emissions and reshaping the current food system. Drawing on findings from semi-structured interviews with local organisers of sustainable community practices in Bournemouth, UK, this study assesses and examines how these practices contribute to a localised sustainable food system. The findings reveal the multifaceted role of sustainable community practices in the UK, highlighting their collaborative nature, emphasis on environmental conservation, and resilience-building initiatives. Despite challenges such as funding constraints and climate change disruptions, sustainable practices demonstrate resilience and offer opportunities for positive change. This article concludes with recommendations that inform policy development and practical applications. Full article
