Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Protected areas serve as key instruments for bio- and geodiversity conservation, landscape preservation, community vitality and promoting sustainable tourism. However, climate disruption is reshaping the ecological and social foundations of protected areas worldwide, with direct implications for tourism management and land use planning. Increased frequency and intensity of climate-induced disturbances, such as droughts, floods, extreme weather events, wildfires, and biodiversity loss, are threatening the ecological and socio-economic integrity of these areas. Such disruptions challenge traditional tourism management models and call for adaptive frameworks capable of integrating environmental uncertainty with sustainable land use and governance approaches.

This Special Issue aims to explore adaptive management strategies that enhance the resilience and sustainability of tourism within protected areas facing climate disruption. We invite research contributions that examine how adaptive and participatory management, spatial planning, and innovative policy mechanisms can balance conservation objectives with tourism development and community well-being. Both theoretical and empirical papers are welcome, especially those employing interdisciplinary and multi-scalar approaches. This Special Issue seeks to integrate perspectives from land system science, environmental governance, and tourism studies to identify innovative pathways for resilience and sustainability in the Anthropocene. By highlighting adaptive approaches, it contributes to ongoing debates on climate-resilient land use, conservation policy, and sustainable development goals.

This Special Issue covers, but is not limited to, the following topics:

  • Climate change impacts and vulnerability of tourism in protected areas;
  • Adaptive management and resilience-based planning approaches;
  • Land use dynamics and spatial planning for sustainable nature-based tourism;
  • Governance models and stakeholder participation in adaptation;
  • Community-based and nature-based tourism for climate resilience;
  • Monitoring, scenario modeling, and decision-support tools for adaptive management;
  • Integrating conservation, tourism, and climate adaptation policies.
