Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Bone tissue engineering represents an important yet challenging field of regenerative medicine due to the complex biological composition, structural organization and dynamic remodeling of native bone tissue. Despite significant advances in biomaterials and regenerative strategies, achieving effective and functional bone regeneration remains a major scientific and clinical challenge.
In recent years, nanotechnology has opened new perspectives through the development of functionalized nanoparticles and nanoconstructs capable of exerting intrinsic pro-regenerative effects or serving as delivery platforms for bioactive molecules and therapeutic agents, thereby promoting osteogenesis and modulating the bone regenerative microenvironment.
This Special Issue will focus on the design, surface modification, characterization and biomedical application of functionalized nanoparticles for bone repair and regeneration. Particular attention will be given to nanoparticles functionalized with bioactive molecules, peptides, polymers, growth factors, drugs, genes or targeting ligands, as well as to their integration into scaffolds, hydrogels, coatings and composite biomaterials.
The Special Issue will highlight their potential to promote osteogenic differentiation, fracture healing, angiogenesis, immunomodulation, antimicrobial activity and controlled therapeutic delivery. Contributions addressing biocompatibility, degradation, toxicity, targeting efficiency, in vivo performance and translational challenges are also encouraged. Building on the existing literature, this Special Issue will provide updated perspectives on multifunctional and targeted nanosystems for next-generation bone tissue engineering.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Functional Biomaterials is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
