Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Given the advancements in treatment protocols and the associated improvement in well-being and quality of life, the attitude towards family building of most patients with chronic diseases does not differ from that of the healthy population.
As a consequence, there is an increasing request for fertility consultations and infertility treatments by patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic inflammatory bowel disease, as well as systemic autoimmune and endocrine disorders. Dealing with reproductive issues in these patients, from contraception to fertility and pregnancy management, provides a new challenge for reproductive physicians, and warrants a multidisciplinary approach.
Clinical data available to counsel these patients are limited mainly because of the difficulty in gathering large case series for each pathology. Care providers and patients would benefit from the exchange of experiences of centers that have developed multidisciplinary approaches for managing reproductive issues in these diseases.
The present Special Issue aims to increase clinicians’ knowledge of a yet poorly explored area and improve the care of patients who suffer from chronic diseases. Specifically, we call for manuscripts on: timing in pregnancy planning, chronic therapies’ effects on female and male fertility, success rate and safety issues related to fertility treatments and assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs), and fertility preservation needs in patients with chronic diseases.
