Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Acute care surgery (ACS) represents one of the most dynamic and resource-intensive domains of modern medicine. Despite advances in surgical technique, perioperative care, and systems-based delivery, substantial global disparities persist in timely access, quality of care, and patient outcomes. ACS challenges are multifactorial, ranging from infrastructure deficits and workforce shortages to diagnostic uncertainty and variability in clinical decision-making. Compounding these difficulties are the rising burden of trauma, aging populations, antimicrobial resistance, and increasingly complex comorbidities. In both high-income and low-resource settings, surgeons are often required to make high-stakes decisions under time pressure, with limited data and evolving protocols. Moreover, the lack of robust evidence guiding operative versus non-operative management in emergent scenarios further complicates care. This Special Issue brings together interdisciplinary research to examine the current landscape of ACS and propose data-driven solutions. By foregrounding equity, innovation, and implementation science, we aim to chart a forward-looking agenda that addresses both immediate clinical challenges and long-term systemic reform.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page.
