Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to contribute to this Special Issue of JCM on personalized interventions for children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder and related disorders.

Translating findings from developmental and behavioral neuroscience can lead to the creation of more effective intervention approaches and strategies. Multi-level intervention approaches can best support developmental trajectories. Moreover, involving parents, teachers, peers, and community members can provide diverse social environmental contexts in which to practice and welcome interventions, increase opportunities to integrate peer contexts, and support the transition to independence. In addition, calibrating interventions according to children’s age, neuropsychological profile, and personal needs appears to be a crucial process that affects intrinsic motivation and improved benefits in daily life.

This Special Issue aims to present recent contributions on therapeutic interventions that tailor the process to the patient’s unique needs, with the goal of bringing scientific research closer to children’s daily lives to best support them at each stage of growth.

We welcome orginal research and reviews that cover, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • Intervention strategies;
  • Therapeutic advance;
  • Studies on differentiated treatment paths;
  • New technology;
  • Individual differences and heterogeneity;
  • Gender differences and potential implications;
  • Factors Influencing intervention’s efficacy.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Clinical Medicine is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.

Background and Objectives: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) involves challenges in social communication and daily functioning. Emerging research highlights that virtual reality (VR) interventions can significantly improve social skills in adults with ASD by providing immersive, controlled practice environments. This systematic review will assess the effectiveness of VR-based interventions for improving social skills in adults with ASD. Materials and Methods: Studies were identified from an online search of PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases without any search time range. This review was registered on Open OSF (n) P4SM5. Results: Recent studies show that VR interventions significantly enhance job interview skills, social abilities, and practical tasks in adults with ASD, with improvements in confidence, social understanding, and everyday skills. VR has been shown to be user-friendly and effective in providing immersive, adaptable training experiences. Conclusions: The review highlights VR’s promising role in improving social skills, job interview abilities, and daily functioning in adults with ASD. It emphasizes the need for broader studies, standardized interventions, and exploration of VR’s integration with other therapies to enhance long-term effectiveness and address comorbidities like anxiety and depression.
