Dear Colleagues,
Foot and ankle fractures encompass a broad and complex spectrum of injuries, ranging from simple low-energy fractures to severe high-energy trauma with significant soft tissue compromise. Due to the intricate anatomy, unique biomechanical properties, and limited vascularity of key structures such as the talus, the management of these injuries continues to pose substantial challenges, often resulting in complications including malunion, nonunion, infection, and post-traumatic arthritis.
This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive and integrative overview of foot and ankle fracture management by bridging fundamental anatomical insights with clinical decision-making. We emphasise the critical role of clinical anatomy, including osseous morphology, ligamentous structures, vascular supply, and surrounding soft tissue envelopes, in understanding fracture patterns, guiding surgical approaches, and preventing complications. Contributions that elucidate the relationship between anatomical characteristics and fracture mechanisms, surgical corridors, fixation strategies, and healing potential are strongly encouraged.
We welcome original research and systematic reviews which address contemporary surgical techniques, minimally invasive approaches, and patient-specific treatment algorithms. Additionally, studies focusing on complication risk factors, predictive modelling, and long-term functional outcomes will be of high interest. The integration of advanced imaging modalities, such as weight-bearing CT, as well as emerging technologies including artificial intelligence and biologic augmentation for fracture healing, will also be highlighted.
This Special Issue further seeks to promote a multidisciplinary perspective involving orthopaedic surgeons, radiologists, anatomists, and basic scientists, thereby fostering translational research that connects foundational science with clinical practice. By doing so, we aim to enhance surgical precision, improve patient outcomes, and advance the scientific understanding of foot and ankle trauma.
