Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming healthcare, offering unprecedented opportunities to improve diagnosis, treatment planning, patient monitoring, and health outcomes. From machine learning models that support early cancer detection to natural language processing tools that enhance communication between patients and providers, AI is increasingly being embedded into clinical workflows. Despite its promise, critical challenges remain in ensuring safety, equity, and trust in AI-powered systems.

The clinical implications of AI extend across multiple domains of patient care, from augmenting clinical decision-making to reducing administrative burdens and personalizing treatment pathways. However, issues of interpretability, bias, generalizability, and integration into existing healthcare infrastructures continue to limit the real-world impact of these technologies. Furthermore, ethical and regulatory considerations are essential to ensure that AI advances do not inadvertently widen disparities in care delivery.

This Special Issue will bring together research and perspectives on the practical, ethical, and clinical dimensions of AI adoption in healthcare. We welcome contributions that highlight both the opportunities and the limitations of AI in patient care, ranging from empirical evaluations to conceptual and methodological advances.

Topics will include the following:

  • Applications of AI in diagnosis, treatment, and patient monitoring;
  • AI for workflow optimization and reduction of clinician burden;
  • Interpretability, fairness, and transparency in clinical AI models;
  • Patient perspectives, trust, and acceptance of AI in care delivery;
  • Ethical, regulatory, and implementation challenges of AI in healthcare;
  • Comparative effectiveness of AI-enhanced interventions versus standard care.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Clinical Medicine is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
