Dear Colleagues,
Over the past decade, imaging of the tricuspid valve (TV) and right ventricle (RV) has undergone a remarkable transformation, driven by advances in multimodality cardiovascular imaging, computational modeling and transcatheter structural interventions. Once considered the “forgotten valve,” the tricuspid valve is now increasingly recognized as a major determinant of morbidity and mortality in patients with valvular heart disease, heart failure, pulmonary hyper-tension, congenital heart disease and atrial fibrillation. At the same time, the right ventricle—owing to its complex geometry, load dependence and unique physiology—continues to represent one of the greatest challenges in cardiovascular imaging. The growing availability of transcatheter tricuspid interventions and novel therapeutic strategies has further highlighted the urgent need for precise and reproducible imaging techniques for patient selection, procedural guidance and longitudinal follow-up.
Recent developments in three-dimensional echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), cardiac computed tomography (CT), strain imaging, fusion imaging and artificial intelligence (AI)-based image analysis are reshaping the way clinicians evaluate right-sided cardiac structures and function. These technologies are enabling more accurate characterization of tri-cuspid valve anatomy, RV remodeling, right heart hemodynamics and device–tissue interactions. However, substantial challenges remain, including the standardization of imaging protocols, inter-vendor variability, the integration of multimodality data and the translation of advanced imaging biomarkers into routine clinical practice. As the field evolves rapidly, there is a critical need for collaborative research addressing both technological innovation and clinical applicability.
This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances related to imaging of the tricuspid valve and right ventricle, with particular emphasis on emerging technologies, multimodality approaches and their role in guiding diagnosis, prognosis and intervention. We welcome original research articles, reviews and clinical studies addressing novel imaging methodologies, translational applications and future directions in right heart imaging.
