Dear Colleagues,
Head and neck surgery is undergoing a period of rapid evolution, driven by technological breakthroughs, refined minimally invasive techniques, and a shift toward organ- and function-preserving treatment strategies. Recent advancements have significantly improved oncological outcomes while reducing patient morbidity and enhancing post-treatment quality of life. As multidisciplinary care becomes increasingly personalized, surgical innovation remains at the forefront of improving clinical management across complex anatomical regions.
This Special Issue, "What's New in Head and Neck Surgery," aims to provide a comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview of recent clinical and technological breakthroughs in the field. We invite researchers, surgeons, and multidisciplinary teams to submit original research articles and clinical trials.
Suggested Topics
We welcome submissions covering, but not limited to, the following key areas:
- Advances in Sinonasal & Skull Base Surgery: Novel endoscopic techniques, image-guided navigation, expanded endonasal approaches, and management of recalcitrant sinonasal pathology.
- Robotic Head & Neck Surgery: Innovations in Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS), flexible robotic platforms, and expanding indications for benign and malignant lesions.
- Thyroid & Parathyroid Ablation: Thermal ablation modalities (e.g., radiofrequency and microwave ablation), minimally invasive thyroidectomy, and intraoperative nerve monitoring.
- De-escalation Strategies in HPV+ HNSCC: Surgical approaches tailored to human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated head and neck cancers to optimize functional preservation without compromising oncological safety.
- AI & Augmented Reality: Applications of artificial intelligence, machine learning, 3D printing, and dynamic intraoperative navigation in surgical planning and reconstruction.
- Reconstructive & Microvascular Innovations: Free flap reconstruction, virtual surgical planning (VSP), functional rehabilitation, and facial nerve reanimation techniques.
- Molecular Diagnostics & Targeted Therapies: Integrating surgical resection with neoadjuvant immunotherapies and biomarker-driven treatment protocols.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
