Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue collects scientific articles focused on the most recent advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs). PJIs are among the most severe complications in the field of orthopedic surgery, representing a leading cause of revision procedures. Furthermore, their timely identification poses a significant challenge, as it requires a high level of clinical expertise and a multidisciplinary approach. The articles included in this Issue provide an overview of the most important innovations within the field of PJI diagnostics, including the employment of advanced screening tools, such as suggestive biomarkers and metagenomic techniques. The latter are playing an increasingly important role in PJI diagnosis, allowing for shorter turnaround times and providing insights into the antimicrobial resistance profile. At the same time, the present editorial explores the most recent advancements in PJI management, reflecting a shift towards a less standardized and more patient-focused approach. Lastly, it looks ahead to areas of expanding research including the potential of artificial intelligence in improving timely PJI diagnosis and treatment and, subsequently, patient-reported outcomes. By providing clinicians and healthcare professionals with a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of the issue, the current edition aims at deepening the understanding of PJIs and fostering innovation, with the ultimate goal of enhancing the standard of care for patients and their quality of life.
