Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rising prevalence of obesity and related metabolic disorders has brought bariatric and gastrointestinal surgery to the forefront of modern clinical practice. This Special Issue focuses on the latest innovations in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery, encompassing technological advances, personalized medicine approaches, and emerging clinical paradigms.
The interplay between bariatric surgery and the gut microbiome is emerging as a transformative field, offering insights into mechanisms of weight loss, metabolic improvement, and potential complications. Concurrently, artificial intelligence, robotics, and advanced imaging technologies are revolutionizing surgical planning and execution. These innovations, combined with personalized medicine approaches and enhanced perioperative protocols, are reshaping the standard of care for patients with obesity and gastrointestinal conditions.
This issue invites contributions that explore clinical outcomes, technical refinements, translational research, and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care. Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Novel minimally invasive surgical techniques in bariatric and gastrointestinal surgery;
- Artificial intelligence and machine learning applications in surgical planning and outcome prediction;
- Robotic-assisted bariatric surgery advances and outcomes;
- Virtual/augmented reality applications in surgical training and planning;
- Gut microbiome alterations following bariatric interventions and their clinical implications;
- Precision medicine approaches and genetic predictors of surgical outcomes;
- Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols and quality metrics;
- Special populations in bariatric surgery (adolescents, elderly, super-obesity);
- Long-term outcomes of laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures;
- Multidisciplinary approaches to perioperative care and outcome optimization;
- Novel endoluminal and incisionless bariatric procedures;
- Strategies to mitigate surgical risks and optimize recovery.
We aim to provide a comprehensive platform for clinicians and researchers to share evidence-based findings and foster collaborative innovation in this rapidly evolving field.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Clinical Medicine is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
