Dear Colleagues,
Research into the oral-gut axis has rapidly emerged as a high-impact, paradigm-shifting hotspot in modern microbiology. Historically, research has largely focused on bacterial interactions confined within the oral cavity. However, accumulating evidence demonstrates that periodontal diseases driven by oral biofilms are intrinsically linked to a variety of systemic conditions, including metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, recent breakthroughs have highlighted the ectopic colonization and involvement of oral bacteria in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), as well as the critical role of Fusobacterium species in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer. Consequently, understanding the complex crosstalk between microbiomes in anatomically distinct sites—far beyond mere intra-oral interactions—has become essential for comprehensively evaluating human systemic disease risks.
Currently, no active Special Issue in the Molecular Microbiology Section fully centers on this highly integrated and timely theme. This proposed Special Issue is carefully designed to complement the ongoing Special Issue, "Gut Microbiota and Host Immune Interactions in Inflammatory Diseases," while strictly ensuring there is no thematic overlap.
The scope of this Special Issue covers vital research directions, including those previously discussed, such as oral biofilms, oral bacteria-associated colorectal cancer, and gut microbial stress responses. Because this integrated theme represents a highly popular and fast-growing research frontier, it is expected to draw abundant, high-quality external submissions from leading researchers worldwide.
We welcome the submission of original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and short communications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the crosstalk between oral and gut microbiota.
- The impact of oral biofilms and periodontal pathogens on systemic conditions, such as metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.
- Ectopic colonization of oral bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract and its implications for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
- The role of Fusobacterium and other oral-derived taxa in the initiation and progression of colorectal cancer.
- Interaction dynamics between microbiomes in anatomically distinct sites and their combined effects on host immunity and disease susceptibility.
- Microbial stress responses and adaptive mechanisms within the oral-gut axis.
- Novel diagnostic, preventive, or therapeutic strategies targeting oral-gut microbiota interactions.
