Dear Colleagues,
Type 1 diabetes emerges from a dynamic and incompletely understood dialogue between pancreatic β cells, the immune system, and the tissue microenvironment. This Special Issue, “Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms of Type 1 Diabetes: From Pathogenesis to Therapeutic Innovation”, seeks studies that move beyond a linear view of autoimmune β-cell destruction to illuminate the molecular events that initiate, amplify, or restrain disease progression.
We welcome original research and focused reviews addressing β-cell stress and identity, antigen processing and presentation, immune-cell activation and tolerance, genetic and epigenetic regulation, inflammatory and metabolic signaling, intercellular communication, and mechanisms of β-cell dysfunction, death, adaptation, or recovery. Particular interest will be given to work integrating human tissues, advanced cellular models, single-cell and spatial approaches, multi-omics, and gene editing, as well as mechanistic studies that connect molecular pathways with disease heterogeneity or therapeutic response.
By bringing together complementary perspectives, this Special Issue aims to identify convergent pathways and actionable mechanisms that may enable earlier intervention, preservation of endogenous β-cell function, and more precise immune or regenerative strategies
