Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Mitochondria can be considered as the metabolic hub of the cell, with the ability to generate the majority of the cell's energy through oxidative phosphorylation. In addition to energy production, mitochondria also play a role in numerous cellular processes, such as calcium signaling, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and apoptosis. Therefore, the maintenance of mitochondrial homeostasis is of peculiar importance to guarantee cell survival.

Mitochondria biogenesis, dynamics and mitophagy represent the major processes for maintaining a healthy pool of mitochondria. These pathways are intimately connected with mitochondria functionality, and indeed the disruption of one of these processes can result in alterations in mitochondria metabolism and functions.

Changes in mitochondrial homeostasis and metabolism have been implicated in a variety of diseases, including neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer. Further research into the mechanisms underlying these changes and the development of therapeutic options that target mitochondrial dysfunctions have the potential to provide new treatments opportunities to challenge these diseases.

This Special Issue entitled “Mitochondria Dynamics and Metabolism in Diseases” aims to cover the latest advances in this topic. We are pleased to invite authors to contribute original research, review articles, mini reviews or perspective articles that address any aspect of mitochondrial metabolism, biogenesis and dynamics in the onset and progression of different pathologies, as well as illustrating any possible mitochondrial target metabolites for the diagnosis or treatment of diseases.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
