Dear Colleagues,
Roots are central to how crops explore soil, recruit microbial partners and adjust to environmental stress, yet these functions are rarely considered together in genetic improvement. Advances in crop genetics now allow root systems to be studied not as isolated traits, but as dynamic components of the plant–soil environment. Genetic variation shapes how roots develop, respond to stress, interact with microbial communities and influence nutrient transformations in the rhizosphere. Yet translating this variation into crop improvement remains difficult because relationships between root phenotype, microbial function and crop performance are still poorly resolved. This Special Issue aims to bring together molecular, genetic and computational studies that advance understanding of these relationships across crop species and growing environments, with particular interest in work connecting biological insight with useful variation for breeding. Original research, reviews and perspectives addressing root and rhizosphere biology within a crop genetics framework are welcome.
