Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Recent advances in research on diet-induced obesity and its progression to diabetes have greatly enhanced our understanding of how high-calorie, high-fat, and ultra-processed diets impair metabolic homeostasis. These dietary patterns promote excessive fat accumulation, insulin resistance, and chronic low-grade inflammation, collectively contributing to the development of type 2 diabetes. Mechanistic studies have identified key roles for gut microbiota dysregulation, altered adipokine signaling, and systemic inflammatory pathways. At the same time, dietary strategies such as Mediterranean, low-carbohydrate, and very-low-calorie diets, together with lifestyle interventions including physical activity and weight loss, have demonstrated efficacy in improving glycemic control and lowering diabetes risk. Emerging approaches—such as precision nutrition, continuous glucose monitoring, and novel pharmacotherapies including Incretin-based therapy, and GLP-1 receptor agonists—are translating these mechanistic insights into more effective strategies for the prevention and management of obesity and diabetes. This Special Issue emphasizes the mechanistic basis of diet-induced obesity and seeks to uncover novel molecular pathways linking diet-induced obesity and diabetes. We invite reviews, original research articles, short communications, and perspective pieces highlighting recent advances in this field.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
