Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Research into plant hormones, particularly cytokinin as the central regulator of plant growth and development, has gained significant momentum since the beginning of this century. Recently, reports have clarified that both isoprenoid and aromatic cytokinins are synthesized in planta, and that direct biological activity is likely restricted to free cytokinin bases, whereas ribosides, O- and N-glucosides, and cytokinin phosphates have roles related to cytokinin homeostasis, such as transport, storage, and metabolism. Furthermore, knowledge related to the intricate mechanisms of cytokinin perception and signaling has also been broadened, and the list of known outcomes on plant growth, development, stress resilience, and inter-kingdom interactions is growing.
With the recent expansion of metabolomics, the evolution of sophisticated analytical methods such as HPLC and LC-MS/MS has enabled the expansion of plant hormonomics, a discipline dedicated to the composition and function of phytohormone metabolites within plant tissues. Combined with standard, single-cell, spatial transcriptomics and other high-throughput molecular techniques, this will enable researchers to more readily infer the precise involvement of plant hormones and their metabolites in various physiological processes. Additionally, the evolution of new-generation imaging techniques will help document these insights and facilitate the utilization of the plant cytokinin apparatus for agricultural and biotechnological purposes.
Hence, this Special Issue welcomes original research and review articles that will advance our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying cytokinin biosynthesis, metabolism, perception, signaling, as well as the mechanistic understanding of their physiological outcomes. Other than research on the biological effects of endogenous cytokinin, studies dedicated to exogenous cytokinin, including the use of synthetic cytokinins, may be considered as long as they provide a robust mechanistic explanation of the molecular mechanisms of the perception, signaling, and physiological effects of these molecules.
