Dear Colleagues,
Advances in molecular and metabolic research have substantially refined our understanding of obesity as a complex, multisystem disorder driven by coordinated alterations in adipose tissue biology, metabolic homeostasis, and inter-organ signalling. Beyond excessive energy storage, obesity is characterized by adipose tissue remodelling, chronic low-grade inflammation, oxidative and endoplasmic reticulum stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and dysregulated endocrine activity, which collectively contribute to the development of obesity-associated diseases such as insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, bone fragility, and chronic inflammatory conditions.
In this context, dietary patterns and nutritional interventions play a pivotal role in modulating molecular and metabolic pathways involved in obesity and its complications. Diet composition, caloric excess or restriction, micronutrient availability, and bioactive food components influence adipose tissue expansion, lipid and glucose metabolism, inflammatory signalling, redox balance, mitochondrial function, and epigenetic regulation. Recent progress in high-resolution molecular methodologies has enabled detailed characterization of diet-induced molecular adaptations and their contribution to tissue-specific and systemic dysfunction.
This Special Issue will present recent molecular and metabolic advances in obesity research, emphasizing original articles and reviews that expand mechanistic insights and the identification of emerging biomarkers and therapeutic strategies.
