Dear Colleagues,

We are organizing a Special Issue on "Recent Advances in Male Reproductive Physiology, Pathophysiology, and Contraception", which will be published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.

As you know, the field of male reproduction has been steadily growing. This responds to the needs of more translational research that will advance our knowledge of the mechanisms underlying sperm production, maturation, and function. Understanding these processes is essential to assist in the development of therapeutic strategies that can specifically target male infertility, for which in most cases the etiology is unknown. On the other hand, the rapidly growing world population and high rate of unintended pregnancies make contraception a need and a priority for any public health program. While several female contraceptives are currently available, male contraception is still a highly desired unmet goal. Given your important contributions to the field of male reproduction, I am inviting you to submit an article with your latest discoveries in this fascinating area of research.

This Special Issue aims to publish original articles, reviews, etc. on male reproductive physiology, pathophysiology, and contraception bringing new perspectives.

We intend to publish your manuscript as an invited “Featured Article”, meaning your submission will be handled on a priority basis. I would be happy to provide any additional information and you can contact me by email in this website's Special Issue Editor's Information section.

The epididymis represents a pivotal organ for sperm maturation and male fertility maintenance. During the epididymal journey, sperm cells undergo morphological and molecular changes that need to acquire the morpho-functional skills necessary for successful oocyte fertilization. Not last, a great enrichment of the spermatozoa RNA payload occurs via an epithelium-derived epididymosome transfer. Currently, circular RNAs (circRNAs), a class of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), are acquiring a prominent role in the setting of sperm quality parameters. In this regard, they are considered potential targets in several male infertility conditions. Despite their consolidated role, few notions are known regarding the alleged epididymal backsplicing activity. In the current review, we discuss the main aspects of spermatozoa maturation along the epididymis and the circRNA role in the field of male reproduction. We also report the most recent findings on the circRNA biogenesis that occurs in the epididymal duct, providing new fascinating evidence on epididymal-derived circRNAs. Finally, we show preliminary compelling data on epididymal backsplicing by exploiting the experimental mouse model of aging. Collectively, these data evidence a remarkable role of the epididymis in remodeling the circRNA payload and in shaping its profile in maturating spermatozoa. Full article
