Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Advances in stem cell science continue to redefine the landscape of modern biomedicine. The remarkable capacity of stem cells to self-renew, differentiate into specialized cell types, and interact with their microenvironment positions them at the forefront of therapeutic innovation. From engineered tissues and organoids to cell-based therapies and disease models, stem cell–driven technologies are transforming our understanding of human biology and enabling new approaches to diagnosis, treatment, and personalized medicine.

This Special Issue, “Stem Cells for Biomedical Applications,” aims to highlight cutting-edge developments that bridge fundamental stem cell biology with real-world biomedical applications. We invite submissions that deepen our mechanistic understanding of stem cell behavior, introduce innovative engineering strategies, or demonstrate translational potential in preclinical or clinical settings.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Stem cell–based regenerative therapies for musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, neural, and other tissue systems
  • Induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technologies, including disease modeling, drug screening, and patient-specific applications
  • Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs): therapeutic mechanisms, immunomodulation, and clinical translation
  • Biomaterials and 3D scaffolds for directing stem cell fate and engineering functional tissues
  • Organoids and organ-on-chip systems for modeling development, pathology, and therapeutic responses
  • Genome editing and synthetic biology approaches for engineering stem cells with enhanced performance or safety
  • Stem cell niches and microenvironmental regulation
  • Cell manufacturing, bioprocessing, and quality control for clinical-grade stem cell production
  • Ethical, regulatory, and safety considerations in stem cell research and therapy development

This special issue welcomes original research articles, reviews, short communications, and perspectives that showcase novel insights or technologies. Submissions that integrate interdisciplinary methods—including materials science, computational modeling, systems biology, and biotechnology—are particularly encouraged.

Through this Special Issue, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of current progress and future directions in stem cell–based biomedical innovation. We look forward to contributions that advance the field and inspire the next generation of therapeutic breakthroughs.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
