Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to contribute to this Special Issue focused on Molecular Research on Melanoma. Melanoma represents one of the most aggressive forms of skin cancer, characterized by a high metastatic potential and significant molecular heterogeneity. Over the past decade, advances in molecular oncology have profoundly transformed our understanding of melanoma biology, revealing complex interactions between genetic mutations, epigenetic regulation, the tumor microenvironment and immune response.

Key discoveries, including alterations in signaling pathways such as MAPK and PI3K/AKT, as well as the identification of actionable mutations (e.g., BRAF, NRAS, and KIT), have led to the development of targeted therapies and immunotherapeutic approaches that have significantly improved patient outcomes. However, therapeutic resistance, disease progression and interpatient variability remain major clinical challenges. Therefore, continued investigation into the molecular mechanisms underlying melanoma initiation, progression and treatment response is critical for the development of more effective and personalized therapeutic strategies.

This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in molecular research in melanoma, bridging basic science and clinical applications. The focus will be on elucidating molecular mechanisms, identifying novel biomarkers and exploring innovative therapeutic targets.

The topic aligns closely with the scope of the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, which emphasizes molecular-level investigations across biology and medicine. By integrating molecular biology, genomics, proteomics and translational oncology, this Special Issue seeks to highlight cutting-edge research that advance our understanding of melanoma and support the development of precision medicine approaches.

The goal is to gather a collection of high-quality contributions that will collectively provide meaningful insights into melanoma biology and treatment.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and comprehensive reviews are welcome. Research areas may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Molecular pathways involved in melanoma initiation and progression
  • Genetic and epigenetic alterations in melanoma
  • Mechanisms of resistance to targeted therapies and immunotherapies
  • Tumor microenvironment and immune modulation
  • Biomarker discovery for diagnosis, prognosis and treatment response
  • Advances in targeted therapies
  • TILs
  • Immunotherapy strategies and molecular predictors of response
  • Single-cell and spatial omics approaches in melanoma research
  • Non-coding RNAs and regulatory networks
  • Metabolic reprogramming in melanoma cells
  • Liquid biopsy and circulating biomarkers
  • Novel experimental models and translational approaches
  • Vaccines

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
