Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Gastrointestinal diseases represent a significant global health burden, with inflammatory and neoplastic conditions being among the most prevalent and clinically challenging. These conditions have become a serious medical and societal issue. In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of understanding the molecular mechanisms that drive the onset, progression, and heterogeneity of these diseases. Elucidating these underlying pathways is essential in identifying novel biomarkers, refining diagnostic tools, and uncovering targets for more effective and personalized therapeutic interventions. Furthermore, insights into the molecular basis underlying treatment responses can facilitate the development of innovative therapeutic strategies and enhance the efficacy of existing treatments.
We are pleased to invite the submission of original research articles, reviews, and comprehensive studies for consideration for this Special Issue.
This Special Issue will cover a broad range of topics related to the molecular basis of, and therapeutic approaches to, gastrointestinal diseases. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- The molecular pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis;
- Genetic and epigenetic risk factors in gastrointestinal cancers, including colorectal cancer;
- The gut microbiome’s role in inflammatory and neoplastic diseases and its therapeutic potential;
- Molecular signaling pathways and immunological mechanisms involved in the progression of intestinal disorders;
- Advanced diagnostic methods based on molecular biomarkers;
- Innovative targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and personalized treatment strategies for inflammatory and neoplastic bowel diseases;
- Preclinical and clinical studies evaluating the efficacy of new drugs and combination therapies;
- The influence of environmental factors and lifestyle on the molecular mechanisms of intestinal diseases;
- Systematic reviews and meta-analyses summarizing the current state of knowledge on molecular mechanisms and therapeutic approaches.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
