Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Heart failure remains a critical and expanding health concern worldwide, characterized by widespread incidence, high mortality, and considerable strain on healthcare resources. Although progress has been made in early detection, prevention, and treatment, the condition continues to challenge clinical management due to its complex and multifactorial nature. Current research emphasizes a deeper exploration of underlying mechanisms, highlighting the roles of immune responses, cytokine signalling, and growth factor activity in disease progression. Emerging evidence also connects heart failure with conditions such as diabetic cardiomyopathy, cardiovascular aging, and chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity.

At the molecular level, disruptions in autophagy, mitochondrial function, and energy metabolism contribute significantly to cardiac dysfunction, while alterations in ion channel activity and rhythmic stability further complicate disease outcomes. Additionally, gut microbiome dysbiosis is increasingly recognized as a contributor to cardiotoxic effects. Structural and functional cardiac remodelling, often driven by hypertension and other risk factors, plays a central role in disease advancement.

Advances in diagnostic approaches, particularly echocardiography, support earlier and more accurate assessment, while therapeutic strategies continue to evolve from conventional pharmacological treatments to innovative device-based interventions. Overall, a comprehensive and integrative understanding of these interconnected pathways is essential for improving prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heart failure.

The Special Issue titled “Molecular Insights in Cardiovascular Disease” seeks to encourage in-depth and integrative research approaches. It welcomes contributions addressing the mechanisms underlying heart failure and its causes, including molecular pathways, as well as diagnostic techniques. Additionally, it covers therapeutic strategies ranging from pharmacological treatments to device-based interventions.

This Special Issue emphasizes the integration of fundamental research, translational studies, and clinical evidence to advance a comprehensive understanding of heart failure pathophysiology, taking into account the multifaceted nature of this complex condition.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
