Dear Colleagues,
Wood and wood-based composite materials are renewable, environmentally significant structural and functional materials whose use in construction, furniture manufacturing, and advanced engineering applications is constantly growing. Given their heterogeneous and anisotropic structure, as well as their sensitivity to external influences, a detailed characterization of their properties and behavior is key to ensuring reliability, durability, and the optimization of their use.
This Special Issue focuses on current research approaches to the characterization, performance evaluation, and modification of wood and wood-based materials. Submissions addressing natural wood of various species, as well as wood-based composite materials in which wood constitutes the principal structural component, are welcome. Topics of interest include the measurement and evaluation of mechanical, physical, surface, and other relevant properties of wood and wood-based composites, together with their behavior under physical, chemical, biological, and environmental influences. Contributions dealing with mechanisms of aging and material degradation under natural and simulated conditions are particularly encouraged. Special attention will be given to studies on the purposeful modification of wood and wood-based materials, including chemical treatments, thermal modification, and surface treatments, as well as to their effects on functional performance and service life. The Special Issue also welcomes research addressing degradation processes under thermal loading and other stress conditions. The aim is to provide an interdisciplinary platform for the dissemination of scientific knowledge and innovative solutions in the research, development, and application of wood and wood-based materials.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Forests is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
