Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Wood is a renewable, versatile, and widely used material, but its performance is often limited by moisture sensitivity, dimensional instability, biological degradation, and weathering. Wood modification has developed as an important approach to improve these properties while maintaining the environmental advantages of wood. From traditional surface charring to modern thermal, chemical, impregnation, densification, and surface modification technologies, the field has evolved into a scientifically and industrially relevant area of wood science. This Special Issue, “Modified Wood: Process–Property–Durability Relationships”, focuses on the links between modification processes, resulting material properties, and long-term durability. Understanding how treatment parameters, wood species, chemical and structural changes, and service conditions influence performance is essential for developing reliable, sustainable, and high-performance wood materials. We welcome original research articles, reviews, and short communications addressing established and emerging wood modification technologies, including thermal modification, acetylation, furfurylation, resin impregnation, densification, surface treatments, and hybrid approaches. Topics may include moisture behaviour, dimensional stability, mechanical and surface properties, biological durability, weathering resistance, fire performance, coating and adhesive compatibility, service-life prediction, modelling, field testing, sustainability, circularity, and life-cycle assessment. This Special Issue aims to provide a platform for research that advances both fundamental understanding and practical application of modified wood in durable and sustainable products.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Forests is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
