Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a biological process for the conversion of organic waste to renewable energy and digestate. The escalating demand for sustainable waste management strategies and renewable energy generation has prompted the need to advance technologies that can maintain efficient AD performance, even under challenging operating conditions. This Special Issue focuses on innovations that support the productivity, resilience and stability of AD systems exposed to conditions such as elevated total solids content, temperature extremes, salinity, elevated organic loading rates, ammonia inhibition, pH fluctuations, and the accumulation of inhibitory compounds.

We invite original research articles, reviews, and perspectives addressing strategies to optimize AD performance under these diverse challenging conditions. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, dry AD, psychrophilic and thermophilic AD processes, microbial community adaptation to extreme AD conditions, extremophilic and syntrophic microbial interactions, bioaugmentation strategies, process-enhancing additives, reactor engineering and design, substrate pretreatment technologies, co-digestion strategies as well as process monitoring and modelling.

Particular emphasis is placed on developing innovative approaches that improve the conversion of solid organic residues, including agricultural and agro-industrial wastes, into renewable energy and value-added products. Beyond the enhancement of biomethane production, this Special Issue aims to also highlight integrated biorefinery approaches that maximize resource recovery through biogas utilization and digestate valorization. As such, contributions exploring digestate use for nutrient recovery, biofertilizer development and soil enhancement applications are strongly encouraged.

The aim of this Special Issue is to provide a collection of articles that deepen our understanding of AD performance under extreme conditions. This will lead to the development of sustainable, cost-effective, robust and adaptable strategies for AD optimization, which is anticipated to support stability of the process and facilitate wider technology adoption. Overall, this collection seeks to contribute toward sustainable bioenergy production, climate resilience, and circular waste management solutions.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
