Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The increasing global demand for energy together with growing environmental concerns has accelerated research and development in carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies for sustainable hydrocarbon recovery and carbon management. Among these technologies, CO2-enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) has emerged as a promising approach that simultaneously improves oil recovery efficiency while enabling long-term geological storage of carbon dioxide. Recent advances in reservoir engineering, porous media characterization, nanotechnology, digital modeling, and experimental techniques have significantly expanded the understanding and application of CO2 utilization in subsurface energy systems.

This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive platform for researchers, engineers, and industry professionals to present recent developments, challenges, and future perspectives related to CO2 utilization and enhanced oil recovery technologies. We invite the contribution of original research articles and review papers on topics including, but not limited to:

  • CO2-enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) technologies and field applications;
  • Geological carbon storage and sequestration;
  • CO2 injection performance and reservoir management;
  • CO2 foams, emulsions, and mobility-control technologies;
  • Nanoparticle-assisted CO2-EOR processes;
  • Wettability alteration and conformance control during CO2 injection;
  • Geochemical interactions associated with CO2 storage and utilization;
  • Reservoir characterization, monitoring, and verification of CO2 projects;
  • Experimental, pore-scale, and numerical investigations of CO2 transport in porous media;
  • Reservoir simulation, machine learning, and data-driven optimization of CO2 utilization and storage operations;
  • CCUS technologies and integrated CO2 utilization strategies;
  • Field-scale implementation, pilot studies, and performance evaluation of CO2-EOR and storage projects.

By promoting collaboration between academia and industry, this Special Issue seeks to advance innovative and economically viable technologies that improve carbon utilization, enhance oil recovery efficiency, and support long-term carbon management and emission reduction goals.

Although this Special Issue covers interdisciplinary research, the core focus of all submissions must remain within the field of energy

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
