Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Special Issue entitled “Net-Zero Energy Microgrids” seeks to underscore recent developments, innovative methodologies, and practical implementations in the design, operation, optimization, and deployment of net-zero energy microgrids. Amidst the rapid expansion of renewable energy sources, distributed energy resources, energy storage systems, electric vehicles, demand-side management, and digital energy management technologies, microgrids are transitioning from traditional localized energy systems to integrated platforms that facilitate both energy resilience and carbon neutrality. Consequently, net-zero energy microgrids are increasingly pivotal in enhancing the utilization of renewable energy, mitigating carbon emissions, improving operational flexibility, and advancing sustainable energy transitions.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Intelligent control and optimization for net-zero energy microgrids;
  • Renewable energy forecasting for solar, wind, and hybrid systems;
  • Integration of renewable energy and energy storage;
  • AI- and machine learning-based energy management;
  • Battery, hydrogen, and hybrid energy storage systems;
  • Demand response and electric vehicle integration;
  • Real-time energy management and predictive control;
  • Optimal scheduling, dispatch, and power flow management;
  • Carbon emission assessment and net-zero performance evaluation;
  • Life-cycle carbon assessment and carbon-neutral operation;
  • Digital twins, IoT, and cyber-physical energy systems;
  • Reliability, resilience, fault-tolerant operation, and LVRT;
  • Grid-connected and islanded microgrid operation;
  • Peer-to-peer energy trading and transactive energy;
  • Virtual power plant integration;
  • Applications in smart campuses, industrial parks, buildings, communities, and remote energy systems;
  • Techno-economic, environmental, and policy assessment.

We especially welcome interdisciplinary submissions that integrate academic research with industrial applications and present solutions that are scalable, reproducible, and practical. This Special Issue seeks to offer a thorough synthesis of recent developments, emerging challenges, and prospective pathways in the field of net-zero energy microgrids, thereby facilitating the advancement toward intelligent, resilient, low-carbon, and sustainable energy infrastructures.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
