Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Climate change and environmental problems are forcing all countries in the world to work together to reverse the situation. Policies worldwide are attempting to minimize the negative environmental impacts of economic activities to the greatest possible extent, since this is key to detaching economic growth from environmental degradation. Furthermore, the energy sector is one of the main industries responsible for greenhouse gas emissions; hence, it is under pressure to take effective and urgent measures to reduce its environmental impact.

This Special Issue will contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the connections between energy, the environment and the economy.

Topics to be covered in this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • The environmental impacts and sustainability of the energy transition;
  • Renewable energy sources;
  • Energy efficiency;
  • Impacts on energy markets and energy prices;
  • The stability of energy supply and energy security;
  • Demand-side management;
  • Energy and the circular economy.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Environmental sustainability is critically important for the conservation of natural resources and the maintenance of ecosystem balance. The environmental consequences of increasing energy demand vary depending on a country’s energy mix. In this context, Pakistan provides a relevant case for analyzing the effects of the energy mix on environmental sustainability, given its energy structure, which includes fossil, renewable, and nuclear energy sources, amid rising energy demand and environmental concerns. In this study, the relationship between the energy mix and environmental sustainability in Pakistan is examined over the period 1990–2023, together with the dynamics of urbanization, information and communication technologies, and financial development. The long-term relationship is investigated using the Fractional Frequency Fourier Autoregressive Distributed Lag (FFF-ADL) and Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) cointegration tests. The findings show that fossil energy consumption exerts pressure that weakens environmental sustainability, while the use of renewable and nuclear energy helps offset this pressure. However, the dynamics of urbanization, information and communication technologies, and financial development limit this offsetting effect, resulting in an overall adverse impact on environmental sustainability. The results of the Wavelet-based Fractional Frequency Fourier Toda–Yamamoto (FFF-TY) causality test reveal a bidirectional causal relationship between energy types and environmental sustainability.
