Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Energy system transition towards the future, driven by electrification, decentralization, digitalization and decarbonization, is reshaping optimal planning and operation. Renewable energy, energy storage systems, distributed generation, demand-side management, and smart grid technologies are emerging solutions for future energy systems. For this transition to occur, the energy system is anticipated to face major technical, economic, environmental, and regulatory challenges. The interdependency between system operation and electricity markets is increasing, whereby operational constraints and market decisions influence each other more strongly. To address these challenges, robust optimization strategies and intelligent decision-making frameworks are needed to enable a reliable, low-carbon and cost-effective energy system transition.
The aim of this Special Issue is to deliver a platform for high-quality research in energy system operation, electricity markets, and optimization strategies in the context of energy transition. We welcome original review papers and research articles that address theoretical approaches, methodological frameworks, and practical applications that advance these research areas. Research contributions aimed at enhancing the reliability, cost-effectiveness and environmental impacts of energy systems are particularly encouraged.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Electricity market design and ancillary services.
- Economic dispatch, unit commitment and optimal power flow.
- Renewable energy integration, energy storage optimization and operational coordination.
- Demand-side flexibility, distributed energy resources and virtual power plants.
- Resilience, reliability and flexibility enhancement.
- Artificial intelligence and data-driven approaches for electricity markets and system operation.
This Special Issue also welcomes research that investigates how technical system operation and electricity market design interact under various uncertainty parameters with the integration of variable renewable energy (VRE). Research applying artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)-based methods for carrying out forecasting, operational planning, and decision-making is within the scope. Policy analyses and practical case studies that demonstrate real-world relevance in energy systems are also welcome. This Special Issue aims to advance understanding of how system operation, electricity markets and optimization strategies can enable an affordable, reliable and low-carbon energy system transition towards net-zero emissions.
