Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The global imperative to mitigate climate change and reduce carbon emissions has significantly accelerated the demand for sustainable energy solutions. Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power are pivotal in this transition, but their inherent variability and intermittency pose significant challenges to power system stability and reliability. As the penetration of renewables into power grids continues to grow, the development of smart and efficient power systems that incorporate advanced energy storage and seamless grid integration will become essential to ensure a resilient and sustainable energy future.
This Special Issue aligns directly with the scope of Sustainability by promoting interdisciplinary research that advances the environmental, economic, and social dimensions of sustainable development in energy systems. It will emphasize the critical role of energy storage solutions—notably batteries, supercapacitors, and hybrid systems—in stabilizing power grids and enabling the large-scale deployment of renewable energy. Furthermore, it will underscore the importance of grid modernization through smart grid technologies and demand-side management to create flexible and resilient infrastructure capable of meeting future energy demands sustainably.
Researchers, practitioners, and policymakers are invited to contribute original articles and comprehensive reviews that deepen our understanding of how emerging technologies can accelerate the shift towards sustainable power systems. Contributions may encompass theoretical analyses, experimental studies, modeling and simulations, or case studies that demonstrate practical applications and policy implications.
Suggested themes include the following:
- Advanced renewable energy storage technologies and systems;
- Smart grid design and grid-interactive renewable energy integration;
- Artificial intelligence and machine learning for power system optimization;
- Demand response and energy management strategies;
- Hybrid and multi-source energy storage solutions;
- Lifecycle assessment and sustainability evaluation of power systems;
- Decarbonization pathways and policy frameworks for renewable integration;
- Resilience and reliability in renewable power systems;
- Digital twins and simulation tools for smart renewable energy systems.
By bringing together multidisciplinary insights, this Special Issue aims to foster innovations that ensure reliable, efficient, and environmentally responsible power systems worldwide.
I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
