Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The transition towards a decarbonized economy relies heavily on the significant deployment of renewable energy sources and the evolution of the electrical grid into decentralized structures. Microgrids (MGs) have become the cornerstone of this transformation, allowing for the integration of distributed generation, energy storage systems, and electric mobility while enhancing grid resilience and efficiency.

However, the increasing complexity of these systems—which are characterized by intermittent sources, bidirectional power flows, and the active participation of prosumers—demands advanced tools for their design and operation. There is a critical need for accurate dynamic modelling, rigorous stability analysis, and robust real-time control and optimization strategies capable of managing hybrid AC/DC architectures and ensuring power quality under varying conditions.

This Special Issue, ‘Microgrids and Renewable Energy Systems: Modelling, Analysis and Control’, aims to address these challenges. We invite researchers to submit original papers and reviews that propose innovative solutions for the next generation of energy systems.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Dynamic modelling and optimal operation of AC, DC, and hybrid microgrids.
  • Advanced control strategies (hierarchical, distributed, and varying-time control).
  • Stability analysis and power quality in renewable-rich systems.
  • Integration of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) applications.
  • Optimization and Energy Management Systems (EMS) for microgrids/energy communities/active prosumers.
  • Grid-forming inverters and power electronics control for microgrids/energy communities/active prosumers.
  • Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) validation and experimental results.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
