Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Manufacturing systems are becoming increasingly interconnected and data-intensive, supported by advanced sensing, automation, and digital infrastructures. Although large volumes of operational data are now available across the shop floor, the integration of process-level intelligence with system-level design, planning, and control remains limited. Optimization efforts often focus on isolated processes, resulting in fragmented improvements rather than coordinated system-wide performance gains.

Artificial intelligence provides new opportunities to connect manufacturing processes with integrated system architectures through data-driven learning and optimization. To fully realize its potential, AI must be embedded in manufacturing system design and operation in a rigorous, scalable manner.

The aim of this Special Issue, entitled "AI-Based Design and Optimization for Manufacturing Systems", is to present studies on intelligent manufacturing processes and AI-enabled design and optimization of manufacturing systems; its scope includes, but is not limited to, the following:

(1) AI-based intelligent monitoring in machining systems;

(2) Data-driven quality control and anomaly prediction;

(3) Explainable AI and trustworthy manufacturing systems;

(4) Adaptive control and optimization in manufacturing processes;

(5) Design and configuration of intelligent manufacturing systems;

(6) Production planning, scheduling, and shop floor coordination in data-rich environments;

(7) Digital twins and cyber–physical manufacturing systems;

(8) System-level integration and performance optimization of manufacturing operations;

(9) Resilient and robust manufacturing systems under uncertainty;

(10) Sustainable and energy-efficient manufacturing systems.

Other contributions aligned with the theme of AI-enabled design and optimization in manufacturing systems will also be considered.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
