Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rise in IoT-connected devices is reshaping how we live and work, with a projected 20.1 billion globally by 2025, representing a 13.21% increase from 2024 (see Kumar, N. 2025). In this scenario, the IoT ecosystem requires diverse and efficient wireless sensor networks (WSN) that work in synergy with mobile edge computing (MEC) and cloud computing.
The diversity of WSN encompasses personal, vehicular, industrial, metropolitan and wide-area networks. Each one is oriented and recommended for specific applications depending on energy, computing and networking requirements. Additionally, every country has its own unique network infrastructure and specific legal requirements.
This Special Issue addresses sensor infrastructure and networking challenges as well as energy consumption and business models for IoT applications and services. The challenges include the processing, computing and storage of data closer to users and electronic devices, as well as their interaction with the cloud.
The research consolidated in this Special Issue will provide valuable insights into the current state of WSN and MEC and will help visualize future directions.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Wireless sensors (intelligent devices, low-power, efficient or robust);
- Data acquisition and processing;
- Mobile Edge Computing algorithms and applications;
- IoT applications and networking;
- Hardware (microcontrollers and electronic devices) and software computing platforms;
- Software-Defined computing architectures;
- Power source (batteries and energy harvesting).
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
