Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching in STEM Education

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Interdisciplinary learning in STEM education is essential for preparing students to tackle complex, real-world challenges that cannot be solved within a single disciplinary boundary. In today’s rapidly evolving world, integrating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—often alongside social, environmental, and humanistic perspectives—cultivates critical, creative, and systems thinking skills necessary for innovation and sustainable problem-solving.

This Special Issue aims to explore how interdisciplinary approaches can transform STEM learning and teaching by connecting conceptual knowledge across domains, enhancing learner engagement, and fostering meaningful understanding. We welcome research that examines interdisciplinary curriculum design, instructional innovation, teacher professional development, and assessment practices that emphasize connections among STEM disciplines. Studies investigating technology-enhanced, AI-supported, or inquiry-based approaches that promote authentic, problem-centered learning are also encouraged.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Interdisciplinary curriculum design and implementation;
  • Inquiry-based and project-based learning in STEM;
  • AI and technology integration to support interdisciplinary instruction;
  • Assessment and validation of interdisciplinary learning outcomes;
  • Teacher education and professional learning for interdisciplinary teaching;
  • Student motivation, collaboration, and identity in STEM learning contexts;
  • Policy and system-level approaches to promoting interdisciplinary education.

We look forward to receiving your contributions and advancing the discussion of interdisciplinary approaches shaping the future of STEM education.

Sincerely,

Dr. Hyesun You
Guest Editor

Manuscript Submission Information
