Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Retinal diseases remain a significant cause of visual impairment and blindness worldwide, presenting complex diagnostic and therapeutic challenges across all age groups. Despite considerable progress in imaging technologies, pharmacologic interventions, and surgical techniques, timely diagnosis and effective management remain critical hurdles—particularly in settings with limited access to specialized care.
In pediatric patients, these challenges are further amplified. Conditions such as Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), Coats disease, familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR), and other developmental retinal disorders require early recognition and intervention to prevent irreversible visual loss and lifelong disability. Early diagnosis during critical periods of visual development can have profound implications on visual and neurodevelopmental outcomes, underscoring the urgent need for innovative diagnostic strategies in pediatric retinal care.
The advent of telemedicine and artificial intelligence (AI) has introduced transformative possibilities in the field of retinal diagnostics. These tools not only enable the detection of early imaging biomarkers but also bridge gaps in care delivery by extending expert-level screening capabilities to underserved and remote populations. AI-assisted image analysis, combined with portable retinal imaging technologies, holds promise in enhancing early detection and triage—particularly for pediatric conditions like ROP, where time-sensitive intervention is crucial.
This 2nd Special Issue will highlight recent advances as well as persistent gaps in the diagnosis and management of retinal diseases, with a dedicated focus on pediatric retinal care and the integration of novel technologies aimed at improving early detection and access to treatment. We welcome original research, reviews, and clinical studies that explore the following:
- Diagnostic challenges and emerging solutions in both adult and pediatric retinal diseases.
- The critical role of early detection in pediatric retina and its impact on long-term outcomes.
- The application of OCT and OCT angiography in identifying early disease biomarkers.
- The use of AI and telemedicine in retinal disease screening, diagnosis, and monitoring.
- Innovations in medical and surgical treatments across a spectrum of retinal conditions, including AMD, diabetic retinopathy, inherited retinal diseases, and ROP.
- Strategies to overcome disparities in access to retina care globally.
This Special Issue aims to foster a comprehensive dialogue around improving outcomes in retinal disease by combining clinical insight with technological innovation, with the ultimate goal of advancing patient-centered, equitable retinal care.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Diagnostics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
