Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Dentistry—in particular, the combined field of oral surgery and oral pathology—plays a significant role within modern healthcare. Far beyond just the management of dental issues, these integrated disciplines address a wide spectrum of conditions involving the oral mucosa, hard and soft tissues, salivary glands, and orofacial structures. Many systemic diseases present early clinical signs in the oral cavity, and several orofacial disorders require both surgical expertise and advanced diagnostic interpretation. For these reasons, oral surgery and oral pathology represent a core interface between dentistry and medicine.

These integrated specialties contribute to the diagnosis and management of mucosal diseases, infections with systemic repercussions, oro-maxillofacial lesions, oral potentially malignant disorders, benign and malignant tumors, and conditions affecting medically compromised or vulnerable patients. Their close interaction with otolaryngology, dermatology, oncology, gastroenterology, maxillofacial surgery, internal medicine, and primary care ensures comprehensive and timely patient evaluation. The interdisciplinary nature of these collaborations reinforces early detection, improves treatment planning, and enhances overall patient outcomes.

Technological advancements, including digital imaging and artificial intelligence, are further transforming the field and impact of oral surgery and oral pathology, enabling more precise diagnosis, safer procedures, and more personalized care pathways.

Even though organizational structures differ across countries, public healthcare systems should further recognize the strategic importance of these integrated dental specialties. Their contribution to the early identification of systemic diseases, oral cancer prevention, and the management of complex orofacial conditions is fundamental for improving population health and strengthening multidisciplinary care models.

This Special Issue welcomes contributions that highlight the clinical relevance, scientific advances, and interdisciplinary role of oral surgery and oral pathology within contemporary healthcare, emphasizing their expanding influence on patient-centered and evidence-based practice.

We are pleased to invite you to submit a manuscript for this Special Issue. Original research articles and reviews on the topics mentioned are welcome.
